MULTI-DAY HIKE

CEDERBERG to OUTENIQUA

24 September - 23 November 2024

Welcome to the longest hike in Southern Africa

Rim of Africa is an unbroken length of long, rugged lines of wild peaks and valleys, stretching some 760km from the Cederberg in the north-west, to the Outeniqua foothills in the east. This unique traverse forms the south-western rim of the African continent.

We have divided the route into 9 spectacular traverses, varying between 7 and 10 days each.

The consecutive days of walking are challenging, as we hike through thick vegetation, over rough rocks (though the exposure is not extreme), and along old trails, in varying weather, sometimes extreme. This is why we  hike the trail just once a year: to take advantage of the best weather window in the Cape seasons.

While we hike far, it is not about distance covered or the fastest time, but we do move at a pace that demands good fitness and an enthusiasm for adventure, albeit with time for relaxed lunches, viewpoints and swims.

The Traverses

Over nearly two decades, we have explored and crafted a multi-day hike that spans the Cape Fold Mountain range. Each year‘s traverse brings a few subtle route changes, some of necessity and others celebrating new discoveries.

We call our route “walking the line”, and it has become one of the world’s finest hiking adventures. Whilst we have a special community of experienced Rim of Africa guides, all involved sense the magic of the line as its seems to guide us through these extraordinary mountains and landscapes.

The Rim of Africa line consists of nine connected traverses, each with their own distinctive character. From the orange Sandstone peaks of the Cederberg in the North-west, to the Outeniqua foothills in the east.

Take a look at each traverse below. Note the dates of each section and apply for your place.
